A new residence on Orcas, designed and carefully situated to capture the many moods of this amazing site: the dominant view over Eastsound, the cascading profile of Mt. Constitution, and also mossy balds, intimate views into the madrona, and a roof inflection towards distant views to Strait of Georgia.
Durable material were chosen to reflect the weather exposure of the site.

This project overlooks farmland and Ships Bay, and is slung low to preserve the view from the neighboring home, above. The large roofs feed a water catchment system, inspiring multiple daylighting strategies to bring natural light deep into the house. Designed as a weekend getaway, this project utilizes tough, low-maintenance surfaces and has carefully selected charms.
This compact project has an amazing site, but it had a dated structure which interfered with daylighting and obstructed what should have been beautiful views across the bay.
We employed a bit of steel framing to lift the roof eave at the back of the house, just enough to frame the skyline of Buck Mountain. Multi-slide doors frame the views and lead to a new deck. Skylights were added on the opposite side in order to balance natural daylighting.
We replaced the roof, and worked with the client to find the perfect shade and sheen for the black cedar siding.
Dated fixtures and finishes in the kitchen were replaced, and the Entry was reorganized via large custom casework built-in storage.
The contractor is typically dedicated to much larger projects, but remarked that “this is the biggest transformation we’ve seen”. We’re pleased, and looking forward to a drink on the deck.

Our Cedars Residence is underway! Very exciting to get this project up and off of the drawing board.
A compact residence we are designing for a gorgeous (and small) Orcas Island waterfront parcel, with numerous site constraints. More to come as we fine tune this exciting project.
